200 Club of Sussex County More Yhan $30,000 in College Scholarships

The 200 Club of Sussex County president, Allen Langjahr has announced that in 2013, more than $30,000 in college scholarships were presented to area students who are pursuing education in emergency services, enforcement and other related subjects and or whose immediate family works in related fields.

Joining the 200 Club of Sussex County were corporate sponsors Franklin Mutual Insurance of Branchville; Hudson Farm of Andover and The Knights of Columbus Marquette Lodge of Sparta. The ceremony was held at Lake Mohawk Country Club on the Boardwalk in Sparta, NJ.

The presentation of the scholarships was presided over by 200 Club president Allen Langjahr and the club’s scholarship committee chairman, Thomas Ryan. A total of 10 scholarships on three tiers were awarded. Families of the recipients and sponsors were invited to take part in the ceremony. A list of the recipients and scholarships is included in this press release.

A non-profit organization exclusively funded by membership dues, the 200 Club of Sussex County’s mandate is to present a “no questions asked” $10,000 check to families of fallen emergency services personnel (police, fire, EMT) within 48 hours of a tragedy.

Joint scholarships of the 200 Club of Sussex County and the local business community that were awarded in a June 19 ceremony included:

The 200 Club of Sussex County / Franklin Mutual Insurance, Inc. Scholarship of $10,000 to Dillon J. Gray of Kittatinny Regional High School. Dillon’s father, John Gray is a Sussex County Sheriff’s Officer. Dillon will be attending Arcadia University to study forensic science with a goal of becoming a forensic medical examiner.

The 200 Club of Sussex County / Hudson Farm Scholarship of $5,000 was awarded to Lenna G. Daniels. Daniels is a student at High Point Regional High School and will be attending Ithaca College in the fall and will be studying education. Her father is a retired New Jersey State Trooper and currently works as a security guard at High Point High School.

The 200 Club of Sussex County / Knight’s of Columbus Marqyette Lodge Scholarship of $2,500 was awarded to Shannon E. McCarthy. McCarthy is a student at Wallkill Valley Regional High School and has applied to Syracuse University, University of New Haven and John J. College. McCarhty is also an EMT with the Ogdensburg First Aid Squad.

The 200 Club of Sussex County $2,500 Scholarship was presented to Steven R. Zappa. Zappa is a 2010 graduate of Kittatinny Regional High School and recently completed his junior year at Rutgers University. Steven’s father is a policeman with the Town of Newton.

The 200 Club of Sussex County $1,500 Scholarships were presented as follows:

Michael A. Bell a Newton High School student who will be attending Rutgers University studying criminal justice.

Karlee M. Liddy, a Newton High School student, plans on joining NROTC studying marine biology or naval engineering. Liddy’s father is an Undersheriff.

Grace Olivia Seaman is a student at Pope John XXIII High School and will be attending the University of Alabama studying international finance. Seaman’s father is a New Jersey State Trooper.

Chelsea B. Armstrong is a graduate of Kittatinny Regional High School and is currently completing her freshman year at Bloomsburg University studying medical imaging. Armstrong’s father is a retired police officer with the town of Newton.

Stacey N. Orlando is a student at Lenape Valley Regional High School and will be attending Arizona State University to major in elementary education. Orlando’s father is a police officer in Rutherford.

Robert R. Schellhammer is a student at Lenape Valley Regional High School and will be attending Prince George’s Community College pursuing a degree in fire science. Schellhammer’s father is a police officer with the town of Byram.

In addition to the forging, the 200 Club of Sussex County has funded two $1,000 scholarships through the Sussex County Community College Foundation. Each of the two scholarships is awarded to a recipient who meets the criteria of the 200 Club of Sussex County.
