Climate Center’s New Energy Tool Focuses On State-Level Activity

The Georgetown Climate Center has launched a new clean energy tool to help states calculate and analyze the potential benefits of new energy policies.

The center’s State Energy Analysis Tool calculates a combination of data and analytic tools to provide a comprehensive state-level overview of the energy sector.

Vicki Arroyo, the Climate Center’s executive director, says the tool, released last month, comes after President Obama revealed his proposed plans for climate change during a June address at Georgetown. The Obama administration is emphasizing the role states will play in developing EPA rules to reduce carbon emissions.

“In the months ahead, we know states will be working closely with power companies and administration officials to devise federal rules to reduce carbon pollution – rules that are flexible enough to meet state needs but also strong enough to ensure that national targets and goals are met,” Arroyo says.

The Climate Center, located within Georgetown’s Law Center, created the new tool so states could profile and compare their energy data – including emissions, energy production and consumption, energy efficiency policies and spending, electricity prices and characteristics of a state’s energy markets.

“States will be reviewing their existing policies and looking for new opportunities to reduce carbon pollution,” Arroyo says. “We believe this tool will provide essential data for states as they consider an array of clean energy policies.”
