Japan Announces Scholarships for Qatari Students

The Japanese government in co-operation, with the Supreme Education Council, has announced a scholarship programme for Qatari nationals, the MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship, for undergraduate and post-graduate studies for the year 2014.

The scholarship for the undergraduate programme will give students an opportunity to study in Japan for five years (from April 2014 to March 2019), including a one year study of the Japanese language. The undergraduate candidate must have been born between April 2, 1992 and April 1, 1997; and must demonstrate an interest in the Japanese language.

The scholarship for research post-graduate programme will give students an opportunity to study in Japan for two years (from April 2014 to March 2016), including a six-month study of Japanese language. The post-graduate candidate must have been born on and after April 2, 1979.

At a press conference held yesterday at the Supreme Education Council’s Higher Education Institute, Japanese Ambassador Kenjiro Monji said that despite facing great challenges after the Great East Japan earthquake, Japan has been making steady progress toward reconstruction.

“Japan is fully ready to welcome more foreign students to study in Japan, including Qatari students. We believe that those who study in Japan will contribute to the development of their respective fields in Qatar by using their experience of studying in Japan and help promote understanding of Japanese education, culture, tradition and way of life in Qatar, and eventually creating more scope of co-operation between Japan and Qatar.”

Interested candidates have until June 13 to apply for the scholarship programme.

Candidates from Qatar will be selected by the Joint Selection Committee comprising officials from the SEC, Qatar University and embassy of Japan through document screening, written examination and interview process.

The Scholarship Expert of Scholarship Office Alawi Balghaith /Higher Education Institute, SEC and Dr Mariam Ali al-Ma’adeed, associate professor and director of the Centre for Advanced Materials Centre at Qatar University, are among the members of the Joint Selection Committee.

The names of selected candidates will be recommended to the MEXT of Japan for the final screening.

In all the previous years, the Japanese scholarships were awarded to one student each in the undergrad and post-grad programmes.
