Pell Grants A Small Case Study. Pell Grants are federal, need-based grants given to low-income undergraduate students. In some cases, certain postbaccalaureate students may also receive Pell Grants.

For a Pell Grant, grades don’t matter as it is completely needs-based. To prove that you meet the financial need requirements, you’ll need to provide documentation such as W2s from the previous tax year and any other income related statements such as bank statements. If you are not employed and do not have a W2, your parents will need to submit theirs.

One important note about the Pell Grant – this is not a loan that has to be paid back. A school grant is money given to a student based on specific requirements that does not have to be paid back.

If you are wondering how much you’ll be given, you might be interested to know that the average award in previous years was between $4,731 and $5,350.

Government grants are first come, first serve, so it’s in your best interest to get your application in as soon as possible, preferrably right after you’ve received your tax information from the previous year.
